Lesson from sparrows

Read Matthew 10:26-33

When Jesus talked about God’s care for the birds, He chose the humble sparrows as His illustration. That’s an interesting choice, for sparrows are one of the most common birds on earth. Some people even consider them pests. Sparrows live almost exclusively among people. According to one study, wherever the number of household increases, the sparrow population increases proportionately. Sparrows build their nests under the eaves of houses, inside shutter boxes, in holes in a wall, or in places such as parks, close to where people live.

From ancient times, sparrows have appeared in folklore, fairy tales, and proverbs. Because sparrows are so common, Jesus knew that through the centuries people would read His words and relate. Jesus said, “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows” (Matthew 10:29, 31). It’s significant that Jesus would take not of their death since the sparrow lives only a few years.

Jesus added, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? So do not worry. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:26-33, excerpted).

He cares for the little sparrow; imagine how much more He cares for you.

Seven Wonders of the world by a child

Some students were asked to list what they thought were the present “Seven Wonders of the World.” Though there were some disagreements, the following received the most votes:

1. Egypt’s Great Pyramids

2. Taj Mahal

3. Grand Canyon

4. Panama Canal

5. Empire State Building

6. St. Peter’s Basilica

7. China’s Great Wall

While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one student had not finished her paper yet. So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list. The girl replied, “Yes, a little. I couldn’t quite make up my mind because there were so many.”

The teacher said, “Well, tell us what you have, and maybe we can help.” The girl hesitated, then read, “I think the ‘Seven Wonders of the World’ are:

1. To See

2. To Hear

3. To Touch

4. To Taste

5. To Feel

6. To Laugh

7. And to Love.”

The room was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop. The things we overlook as simple and ordinary and that we take for granted are truly wondrous!

A gentle reminder — that the most precious things in life cannot be built by hand or bought by man. :)
